Description
| British sword bayonet and scabbard. 1907 Pattern to fit the Rifle, Short, Magazine Lee Enfield. The blade is single-edged, with a straight, rounded spine. It has a single fuller (groove) on each side. The ricasso is stamped on one side 'Wilkinson' with the numbers 1 and 17, and on the other side with an X proof-mark and the number 18 with additional inspection marks. These markings indicate the bayonet was made by Wilkinson Sword in January 1917. The grips are of wood, held together by two brass screw-rivets. The crossguard, pommel, and ricasso are of darkened steel, while the rest of the blade is polished. The bayonet is of leather with a darkened steel collar at the throat and a darkened steel chape (tip). There is a paper sticker on the leather of the scabbard. This was the type of bayonet used by the majority of British and Dominion (Commonwealth) soldiers during the First World War. |
