Description Gothic Hilt, Rifle Pattern Officers'. Plated guard featuring Queen Victoria's Crown above a bugle within a wreath. The blade is single edged, becoming double edged towards the end which is a spear point. The blade is etched with Queen Victoria's Crown and a device comprising a shield, in which is a goose-like bird above a scroll reading 'Laus Deo', above a bugle. The blade is marked near the ricasso 'PRESENTED TO/ MAJOR J. H. LAYE, SCOTTISH RIFLES/ BY THE MEN OF THE 3RD LANARKSHIRE R.V./AS A PARTING REMEMBRANCE/ IN TOKEN OF THEIR RESPECT FOR HIM/AS ADJUTANT OF THE CORPS/ 20TH OCTOBER, 1886'. The other side of the blade carries the Queens' Crown and the cypher VR. The makers details are recorded on and above the ricasso 'BY APPOINTMENT', 'HENRY/ WILKINSON/ PALL MALL/ LONDON'. The spine of the blade is marked with the number 27384 or 27584. Steel scabbard with two suspender rings. The scabbard may not match this sword, as when sheathed the sword sits proud of the throat by 2-3 inches. Alternatively the scabbard may be blocked internally, preventing the blade being fully inserted.
